Non-Event is pleased to present a rare local performance by Nmperign, the saxophone/trumpet duo of Bhob Rainey and Greg Kelley, and the duo of bassist Brittany Karlson and percussionist Nick Neuberg.

About the Artists

Nmperign is known for exploring the quiet side of free improvisation often basing its music around long tones and extended-technique effects to evoke the sounds of electronic drones. Founded in 1998 in Boston, the duo was one of the key ensembles in Boston’s improv and experimental music scene until 2009, when Bhob Rainey moved to New Orleans and then Philadelphia.

Bhob Rainey is a Philadelphia-based composer, saxophonist, and sound designer celebrated for his innovative contributions to contemporary, experimental, and improvised music. A recipient of the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts and co-founder of the influential improvisational duo nmperign, Rainey has garnered acclaim for his groundbreaking work across disciplines, including collaborations in theater, dance, and visual art. With performances and commissions spanning prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, his work continuously challenges boundaries of musical thought and instrumental technique.

Greg Kelley has performed throughout North America, Europe, Japan, Argentina & Mexico at numerous festivals, in clubs, outdoors, in living rooms, in a bank, and at least once on a vibrating floor. He has collaborated with a number of musicians across the globe performing experimental music, free jazz and noise, appearing on over 100 recordings in the process. He constantly seeks to push the boundaries of the trumpet and of “music.”

Bassist/vocalist Brittany Karlson is an adventurous musician with roots in jazz, American folk music, and improvised music. She has performed across the USA, Canada, and Europe in a variety of ensemble settings, including improvised trio Letter Castle and American old-time/bluegrass/Swedish string band The Goodbye Girls. When performing solo, Karlson improvises, performs original songs under the moniker Karl, or ducks behind her bass to perform a lighthearted puppet show with many props. Karlson is an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher. Long based in Boston, she currently lives in New York City.

Nick Neuburg is a drummer/percussionist, pianist and composer originally from the greater Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Nick attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with the legendary drummers Rakalam Bob Moses and Billy Hart and studied composition and improvisation with pianist Anthony Coleman and Guitarist Joe Morris. Upon graduating in the spring of 2014, Nick remained in the greater Boston area until the summer of 2018, during which time he both remained active in the creative music scene as a performer and became busy working and teaching. Now living in NYC, Nick has performed as a part of the bands Aykroyd, Letter Castle, Particulars, Ryan Power, Los Greys, Every Kim Parcell, Listening Woman and Creative Healing, among others.
