VICTORIA SHEN is a noise musician, visual artist, and instrument-maker native to San Francisco but working out of New England. Shen’s sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Shen’s music floods its location acting as a form of sculpture. Her music features analog modular synthesizers (Flower Electronics), contact microphones, and other self-built electronics. These instruments are designed to electronically reproduce chaotic systems, systems which are highly sensitive to small changes in their initial parameters. The resulting music eschews conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of the extreme textures and gestural tones.

ANDREA PENSADO is an experimental musician, composer, and organizer, based in Salem, Massachusetts. While she initially composed for acoustic instruments, she was increasingly attracted to working with electronics to create a far more abrasive sound world. In her current work, she employs a highly personal sonic language using harsh, dense layers of sounds, often interwoven with her voice. Her live, interactive musical systems and use of invented language combine into inherently unstable performances full of ecstatic energy. In addition to her solo work, she has longtime collaborations with Chris Strunk & Walter Wright as Los Condenados, and Jen Gelineau & Stephanie Germaine as Phurnne. She also curates the Sonorium concert series in Salem.

BROMP TREB is the solo project of Neil Cloaca Young a western Mass based artist who works with noises, moving images, and events. He has many recordings in circulation and has screened in and performed at fancy-pants places like ICA Boston and the High Zero Festival as well as countless basements, bars, lofts, living rooms, closets and art spaces all around North America and Europe.

VARIANT STATE [….] is a project instigated by Howard Martin (reeds), Jesse Kenas-Collins (trumpet, reeds, feedback objects), and Michael Rosenstein (amplified surfaces and objects, modified field recordings, oscillators.) Working In various configurations, they explore the interactions of acoustic instrumentation, electronics, multiphonics, abraded and degraded recordings, and feedback within collectively improvised settings. Their open-form sonic investigations draw on aesthetics of spontaneous interaction and dynamic cooperative structures. For this concert the lineup will be Jesse Kenas-Collins and Michael Rosenstein.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, administrated by the Mayor’s Office of Arts + Culture..
