DOUBLE AWAKE is the longest-running project of William David Mayo, a Boston-based musician who also performs as Homeworld and spins electronic music as DJ Won’t. He has also been organizing events around town for several years, originally through his label Slow Blood but more recently Open Loop. Beginning in 2006, he’s used Double Awake to explore the possibilities of combining disparate electronic devices (often in unintended ways) to create unpredictably “organic” music. The Mackie mixer is used to route various audio and gate signals into and around each other, weaving looped phrases through feedback, filters, and delay pedals to create cascading waves of harmony, texture, and noise. Though originally focussing on primarily abstract soundscapes with a modified Realistic MG-1 synthesizer, the Double Awake sound has evolved to incorporate analog sequencers and occasionally drum machines as a means to corral the chaos.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Brookline Commission for the Arts, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
